Messiah Lutheran Church in Reynoldsburg is refurbishing
Luther Haus, which will provide temporary housing for homeless women in the
central Ohio area. Lutheran Social Services, which runs Faith Mission and the
Nancy's Place Women's Shelter in downtown Columbus, is working closely with
Messiah Lutheran Church in Reynoldsburg to turn the church's Luther Haus into a
transitional housing center for women older than 55. This is a new program aimed
at keeping older homeless women out of shelters.
"It's unique in the sense of the population we are targeting. Although many
programs, including federal housing assistance for senior citizens, are
available to older adults, there are often waiting lists ranging from 30 days to
a year. Monetary assistance, food stamps and Social Security benefits also take
time to kick in once they are requested,” said John Dickey, chief executive
officer of Lutheran Social Services
“Since its relationship with the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) ended last
year, Luther Haus volunteers had been looking for a new way to serve the
community,” said Nancy Becker, a Messiah Lutheran volunteer.
